"Baloney" is a fun, action filled book describing the events that happen to make Baloney late for class. But can you understand what he is trying to say?
The illustrations in this book are what make the book seem adventurous. Each picture is filled with all kind of shapes to make each event seem inviting and make you feel like you are there. As you read, you want to know what happens next. The author and Illustrator do a great job of bringing the reader in as though they are along for the ride with Baloney. Each line and curve, circle and triangle, square and dot, have a part in making the book seem scientifically put together.

Grade: 3rd
Content Area: English Language Arts
Standard: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing
                   literal from nonliteral language. [RL.3.4]

To give this book a classroom application, a teacher could use it as a way to expand student vocabulary. When Baloney is describing his adventures to get to class, he uses unfamiliar words. As students read the book, they could take a sticky note and mark any time that they see a word they are not sure about. Once everyone has finished reading the book, the teacher could allow time for the students to look up the meanings of the words, or perhaps get the students to predict what the word means and then the teacher give them the real meaning. This is a chance for everyone to learn new words and meanings.
"Baloney" shows up late to class, but provides an unusual response when the teacher threatens to give him life-long detention. He describes an adventure like no other that involves him going to space and using a whole bunch of uncommon words. I think in the end, the teacher got so caught up in all the words, that she forgot about the detention and told him to sit down and start working. Overall, this is an entertaining book filled with new words to describe the imagination of why one student was late to class. It is a fun way to bring new vocabulary to each student in the classroom.
